BAKU (Sputnik) — Azerbaijan is ready to purchase up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia annually, the president of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) said Wednesday.
"An Azerbaijani state company, SOCAR, has sent to Russia's [energy giant] Gazprom proposals on the purchase of 3 to 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually," Rovnag Ibrahim Abdullayev told journalists.
In September 2015, Gazprom started to supply natural gas to Azerbaijan in accordance with a five-year agreement with a possibility of extension. The agreement envisages the supply of up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas to Azerbaijan per year.
In late December 2015, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Abdullayev discussed a possible increase in supply given natural gas demand growth prospects in Azerbaijan.
