‘Climate change’ is not mentioned once in the 248 pages of text of the huge proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal, despite the fact that the text includes rules that would restrict the tools that the United States and EU could use to tackle climate change, according to the Sierra Club.

US Claims Interpretation of Leaked TTIP Documents ‘Misleading’
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Details of the huge proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal leaked to the public confirm the Obama administration is determined to destroy environmental protections in Europe as well as the United States, the Sierra Club said in a statement on Monday.

"‘Climate change’ is not mentioned once in the 248 pages of text, despite the fact that the text includes rules that would restrict the tools that the United States and EU [European Union] could use to tackle climate change," Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program Director Ilana Solomon stated.

On Sunday, Greenpeace Netherlands released leaked negotiation texts from the TTIP.

EU-US Controversy on TTIP Deal 'Greater Than Acknowledged' by Brussels
The material revealed "for the first time the US’s position to undermine environmental and climate protections. The text… shows the deal would grant broad rights to corporations to undermine climate policies," Solomon noted.

The text includes trade rules that have been used against ‘buy-local’ policies that create local clean energy jobs and support clean energy entrepreneurs. At least 23 US states have such programs, the Sierra Club pointed out.

The Sierra Club is the largest grassroots environmental organization in the United States, with more than 2.4 million members and supporters, according to its web site.
