MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The political process in Syria must remain “on track” in continuation of the international efforts, in order for peace to be settled in the war-torn country, US President Barack Obama said Sunday.

"Creating the situation in which we can actually protect all the people inside of Syria…the best bet for doing it is to get this political process on track," Obama said at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the German city of Hannover, broadcast by the TRT World news channel.

Obama added that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week to reassure that political process in Syria "does not unwind."
