"EU countries and the US should figure out what can be done in Syria. The quicker we manage to stabilize the situation in Syria, the better it will be for all those interested in the resolution of the migration crisis," Egmont said.
He also called for creating an effective mechanism to regulate migrant flows, urging the EU to change its stance on refugees.
"It seems to me that it is quite possible for Europe to [adopt a] much more positive posture toward migration-related issues and elaborate a [quota] system that will effectively work," he pointed out.
In this regard, he specifically stressed the necessity of all parties concerned to discuss the topic at the negotiating table.
Earlier this week, UN Refugee Agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told Sputnik that the policy which has become widespread among European nations to reduce migrant flows will be unable to solve the ongoing migrant crisis.
The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people leaving conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa for Europe.
Earlier this week, a number of EU states, particularly those from the Western Balkans, adopted a number of refugee containment policies, deploying their militaries along their national borders and introducing quotas on the influx of migrants.
