MUSCAT (Sputnik) Operations in Syria by the US-led coalition have become more effective after Russia’s Aerospace Forces began their operations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

“We showed an example to the US-led coalition, whose activity against the [Daesh, which is prohibited in numerous countries including the United States and Russia] wasn’t very impressive over the last year and a half. We’re happy that the successes of Russia’s operations and the coalition’s activity have become much more effective,” Lavrov said in Oman.

A US-led coalition of 66 countries has been carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State terrorists in Iraq since August 2014 and in Syria since September 2014, without permission from Damascus or the UN Security Council.

Since late September 2015, Moscow has been conducting an aerial campaign in Syria against the Islamic State and Nusra Front terror groups, which are banned in Russia, at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

In October 2015, Russian and US officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining safety procedures for the two countries’ respective air operations in Syria.
