MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, Tehran freed four Iranian-American prisoners in exchange for seven Iranian-US nationals serving their sentence at US jails, under a deal with Washington.
"We are very happy that our son, Matthew, was released today after 40 days of detention at Evin Prison in Tehran," the statement published on website of the United States Institute of Peace said on Saturday.
The statement added that the Trevithick's family was grateful to all those, who had worked for his release.
According to the family, Trevithick, who was liberated separately from other four prisoners, was a co-founder of the Turkey-based Syria Research and Evaluation Organization.
Later in the day, CNN broadcaster reported that Trevithick became the first of US citizens released on Saturday, who left Iran.
