Iran's semiofficial Fars new agency reported the two US Navy boats detained in the Persian Gulf had illegally traveled more than a mile into Iran's territorial waters, and that GPS equipment confiscated by Islamic Revolutionary Guards Navy forces would "prove that the American ships were 'snooping' around in Iranian waters."

Ten American service members were arrested in the encounter, the New York Times reported, citing Tabnak, a semiofficial Iranian website.

The Pentagon reported earlier Tuesday that it briefly lost contact with two small US Navy boats operating in the Persian Gulf. The vessels were picked up by Iran, which has assured Washington that both ships and all crew members would be returned to the US "promptly."

Military officials told NBC News that up to ten US sailors were on a training mission around noon ET when one of the vessels — small riverines — began experiencing mechanical difficulties and drifted into Iranian waters. The sailors were detained by Iranian forces and were being held on Farsi Island in the Gulf.

The Daily Beast later reported the sailors — reportedly 9 men and one woman — would be held through US President Barack Obama's State of the Union address in Washington on Tuesday evening, and through Wednesday.  The publication cited senior defense officials.  Two US officials confirmed to Reuters that it was unlikely the sailors would be released overnight.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards confirmed the seizure of the US boats, and reported that the sailors are alive and well.

At level one, you have "all bogey men - all the time," breaking media propaganda. Iran is a criminal whore regime -we knew that- and they have <gasp> captured our sailors! This is an outrage! We protest in the strongest possible terms! There's going to be a strongly worded UN proposal condemning Iran's provocation after provocation!

At level two you have the "never let any crisis be resolved until you've played it for all it's worth." Oh this is rich, how good does this look on the night of the Bamster's last state of the union address? And, maybe, we can stretch "returned promptly" out long enough to have an impact on the Democratic presidential race. A false leak about some kind of nefarious purpose, blamed on the Bamster white house ought to do it.

At Level three you have "Special Projects," covertly sending in operatives, disguised as sailors, to recon Farsi Island. They are being handled by the levels above them and don't have a clue as to what is really going on. This would be our in-theater commanders.

At Level four you have, "Life is all about asymmetrical warfare" guys, going along with the Level Three guys, but for an altogether different objective...see how long it takes the Iranians to respond to an incursion into their territorial waters with military craft.

And then, At Level five you have "I know that you know that I know that you know" spy versus spy. We send in those guys, make them think they are on some important mission, and then we tip off the Iranians so they're sure to be caught, so then we can claim it was a mistake, and then spin the hell out of it so it ends up that the unsigned nuclear agreement and be abandoned and give us probably cause to bomb the snot out them, and steal their gold, just like the good ol' days, eh? That's fork one; meanwhile on fork two you have a staged territorial violation that gets played up as a major diplomatic snafu, so that after what looks like very serious and touchy negotiations at numerous meetings held in exotic locations you'll only dream about, Iran and the US "hammer out" a resolution, and everyone involved gets to put a feather in their caps and wear a gold star for diplomacy above and beyond the call of credibility. And after that, the Bamster will make a speech in which he claims credit, "It was all my idea, and my sleepless, non-stop hard work that got those guys released -God knows where they would be right now if AYE- wasn't so experienced and smooth at this kind of stuff...which you don't understand, I know...you'll thank me later."

Jim Dean: Hey! You can't make this stuff up!

    Me: I know! And I didn't!

marcanhalt, Americans seem to also get lost when walking near Iran's and North Korean borders, maybe they should ditch their GPS and switch to GLONASS

tony p, Aww shoot! I knew we didn't get it right! Well, at least we got the first letter right when we packed to leave: Geiger counter.
  • So, one craft developed "mechanical problems" as a result of which, it drifted over a mile into Iranian waters, with GPS on board and with the other craft following it???? Did it ever occur to these sailors, that the functioning craft could TOW the disabled boat into international waters, probably all the way back to Bahrain if necessary? (That is a rhetorical question.) The US Navy was not training but probing Iran's defenses. Seems that they work. I wonder what these sailors dumped overboard before the Iranian coast guard took them into custody.

The sailors experienced a brain malfunction.

The terrorist American government looking to start a new war? The morally bankrupt cesspool of a nation does enjoy its murderous wars.

It's like saying it's sunny when the sun shines. US intentionally sent those two boats in Iranian waters to drop listening devices as close to the Iranian shore as possible. And Iranian took the opportunity to act humanely. How naive. Out of this naivety though, Iran deprived US of an opportunity to escalate tension so desperately needed by the US think tanks (whore tanks actually) to wage war on Iran.

    tony p,
Yeah, heheh, it is not a good idea for the US navy to being using a sextant for navigation when so close to disputed and hostile territorial borders.
Were they using a rope off the end of the boat in the water with knots in it for measuring their speed as well ? heheh.

dan sheppard, US navy still uses the Mark Twain method. :)

We are giving much too much importance to this incident.
Final question to the US of NA : what were your boats doing there?
Promise not to do it again. Will you? .......Hopeless decadent government of a crumbling country, which still has a sizeable minority of decent people, very decent people.

MsLiberty, I like the level 5 spy vs spy, myself. That's actually pretty credible - the CIA does that all the time...remember the USS LIBERTY?
  • Ann in reply toTariq A(Show commentHide comment)
Tariq A, Yeah, the Iranians probably just held the sailors until they found whatever they dumped overboard and retrieved it.
