It's a War: Poll Shows Germans' Stance on Bundeswehr Operation in Syria

Most Germans are inclined to consider the German Armed Forces' anti-Daesh operation in Syria a war, the news network Deutsche Welle reported on Monday.

A new public opinion survey has revealed that most German consider Bundeswehr's military operation against Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) in Syria a war, according to the news network Deutsche Welle.

The poll was conducted  by the world-leading online market research company YouGov.

A majority of respondents (55 pecent) said that the German military supporting the international coalition's air raids against Daesh militants in Syria is nothing but a war, while another 35 percent said that speaking of Bundeswehr's war in Syria is irrelevant.

The German government in turn avoids using the word "war" in connection with the operation in Syria, explaining that under international law, a war is something that is waged by at least two states.

In this regard, Deutsche Welle recalled that Berlin has repeatedly said that it will never recognize Daesh as a state.

Right now, a tanker aircraft and a frigate of the German Armed Forces support the French Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, which is deployed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The German reconnaissance aircraft Tornado will be engaged in the anti-Daesh military operation in the coming days.

On November 25, 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to support France's anti-Daesh campaign following the deadly Paris attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people earlier that month.
