While Russia’s modernization has resulted in flexible and effective armed forces, Germany’s head NATO general believes the alliance has fallen behind due to a lack of investment.

Russia has invested in the development of modern, flexible and effective armed forces, while NATO has neglected the necessary investment, said Germany’s top NATO commander General Hans-Lothar Domrose on Wednesday.

“Russia has invested so heavily that its armed forces are highly modern, flexible and effective today – and also numerically strong,” said Domrose, who contrasted Russian investment with what he called a 25 percent decrease in NATO investment over the last 25 years.

“We must now monitor very closely whether we, NATO, have become too small and it (Russia) too big.”

‘At the lower limit: German NATO general sees the balance of power in danger,’ reported Fokus.de, the newspaper which interviewed General Domrose.

When comparing the organizations’ armed forces, Domrose spoke of the need for a balance in the world’s military might in order to prevent its misuse.

“If the relationship with each other is no longer correct, there is a danger that deterrence is shaken. Now smart people have to decide if the relationship between the two sides is still the right one.”

“It’s always about keeping a fair balance,” said Domrose, who started his military career with the Bundeswehr in 1973.

“As long as there is a healthy balance, nothing happens.”
