UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Yevgeniy Zagaynov has called for harsh measures against organizers of human trafficking, particularly the Islamic State (Daesh) group, known as Daesh in the Arab world and outlawed in Russia.

"Against the backdrop of an unprecedented upsurge in terrorist activity in the Middle East and North Africa, we are particularly dismayed by the routine atrocities by the insurgents of ISIS [Daesh] against representatives of religious, national, ethnic, and confessional minorities, Christians, Kurds, Yazidis and others," Zagaynov said at a Wednesday UN Security Council meeting.

According to Zagaynov, Russia is in favour of strengthening the role of the United Nations in eradicating "modern slavery" (human trafficking).

"Harsh measures are needed against criminal groups that are organizers or intermediaries with live merchandise. Only a holistic approach, and not merely, for example, a more strict migration policy, can we achieve effective outcome in combating the trafficking in persons," Zagaynov stressed.

According to UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson, thousands of women have been abducted and enslaved by Daesh, particularly those from the Yazidi religious community in Iraq.

The UN Deputy Secretary General called for more countries to become party to international treaties against human trafficking and slavery on Wednesday, stressing that human rights, especially those of women and children, must be protected.
