TOKYO (Sputnik) It comes as South Korean President Park Geun-hye announced, on Tuesday, that she intends to increase military spending to counter the perceived threat posed to the country by North Korea.

According to a statement issued by Seoul, the heads of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US and South Korean Armed Forces will also participate in the scheduled talks.

The talks will be devoted to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, the conditions and the time frame for the transfer of operational control over South Korean forces from Washington to Seoul, as well as means of cooperation between the two countries in the field of cybersecurity and ensuring peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific region.

Seoul and Pyongyang signed a ceasefire after the 1950-1953 Korean War, but the countries formally remain in a state of war. In August, the first armed clashes between the neighbors in over five years followed South Korea’s resumed broadcasting of military propaganda over the border toward North Korea.
