MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Rafah border crossing, the main entry and exit point in Gaza, has been shut down after an October 24 attack killed over 30 Egyptian security personnel.
According to the Palestinian embassy in Egypt, cited by Aswat Masriya, the decision to open the checkpoint to allow Palestinians to reenter the Gaza Strip came after high-level consultations between Palestinian and Egyptian authorities. The Palestinian side reportedly thanked Egypt for its readiness to "alleviate the suffering" of the people of Gaza.
The Gaza Strip, which borders Israel on the east and Egypt on the southwest, is part of the Palestine-controlled territories. According to the UN Relief and Works Agency, some 42,000 refugee family shelters in the area were affected by the 50-day war between Israel and Palestine in June 2014. In the result of bombardment, over 96,000 homes in Gaza were damaged or destroyed, UN figures revealed.
