MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned on Saturday attempts to use religion as a political tool in the wake of a deadly suicide attack on a mosque in Saudi Arabia.

On Friday, a suicide bomber detonated explosives during prayers at a Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia's eastern province, killing 21 people and injuring more than 100.

"We consistently denounce any use of religion for political purposes and for igniting inter-religious conflicts," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

Iran Condemns Terrorist Attack on Shia Mosque in Saudi Arabia
The Foreign Ministry Spokesman voiced Moscow's support for Saudi Arabia while also urging other countries to help combat terrorism in the Middle East and beyond.

"We once again call on international and regional partners to consolidate efforts to counter violent extremism using international legal regulations, including the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions," Lukashevich said.

The Islamic State (ISIL) militant group has claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Saudi mosque, making it the first ISIL attack in the country.

ISIL Sunni jihadist group has repeatedly threatened to attack Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia.
