US Air Force jets shelled Iranian troops on territories of Iraq that have already been liberated during an earlier raid against ISIL militants. Eyewitnesses revealed the details of the incident exclusively to Sputnik Arabic’s local correspondent.

US planes carried out airstrikes on Iranian soldiers near the recently liberated city of Jurf al-Nasr, 60 kilometers away from Baghdad.

"Everybody was saying that the American jets mistakenly hit either the fighters of Iraqi Shiite troops, who also fight against ISIL, or the country’s security forces, but that’s all wrong. We saw how the attack was committed against a Quds brigade” a witness named Abu Tamer told Sputnik Arabic’s correspondent Nazek Mohammed.

Quds Force is the elite unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, responsible for foreign operations. It’s believed to be one of the best military groups in the Middle East. Tehran allegedly sent around 500 soldiers to neighboring Iraq to help fight the Islamic militants in the region.

Tamer’s words were confirmed by an Iraqi Shiite combatant, who said: "A few days ago an air strike hit the Iranian army’s Quds soldiers, who were transporting missiles in Jurf al-Nasr for use by the Iraqi Army”.

Jurf al-Nasr, also known as Jurf al-Sakhar, is a strategically important location on the route that links Baghdad with the ISIL-controlled Anbar province in the west of the country.

It’s still unknown if the strikes were carried out on purpose, but it’s not the first time the US-led forces blunder in the controversial airstrike campaign against militants.

Just in October the jihadists posted a video claiming they received US military ammunition and other supplies that were supposed to be airdropped on Kurdish forces locked in the Syrian town of Kobane near the Turkish border.
