MOSCOW, November 13 (RIA Novosti) — A suicide bomber was killed in eastern Afghanistan's provincial capital of Jalalabad as he attempted to strike a NATO convoy in the area, the spokesperson of Nangarhar province's governor stated Thursday.

"The suicide attacker who was driving a Rickshaw, was detected and killed by foreign forces before he could reach them," spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai was quoted as saying by Afghanistan's 1TV television channel.

However, according to the official spokesperson of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, a Taliban organization, the suicide bomber destroyed two US tanks, killing 12 people onboard them.

The attack was the third in less than a week in Jalalabad.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been deployed to Afghanistan since 2001 to help the nation rebuild government institutions and its security forces, as US-led coalition troops fought to remove the Taliban from power.

The ISAF's mission is scheduled to finish at the end of 2014. From January 1, 2015, NATO will lead a new mission, Resolute Support, which provides training and noncombat assistance to the Afghan National Security Forces, and also to back the Central Asian nation's reforms. The operation will involve some 12,000 personnel.
