MOSCOW, November 6 (RIA Novosti) — The Australian and British police will share each other's DNA databases for investigations of serious crimes under a memorandum of understanding, signed at ministerial level, The Guardian reported Thursday.
"This will allow information to be shared in a secure and a proportionate manner that will strengthen our crime fighting capabilities and help solve serious cases like rapes and murders," the British Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said as quoted by The Guardian.
Australian Justice Minister Michael Keenan noted that the way the modern world is interconnected reflects how essential it is to cooperate and share data, especially when criminals are ready to seize any moment to hide and find shelter.
"We will continue to seek opportunities for further exchange of DNA and another biometrics data to support domestic and international criminal investigations," the newspaper quoted Keenan as saying.
According to The Guardian, Australia's criminal DNA database includes the details of around 750,000 individuals. British profiles make up about seven million people in the database.
