A suspected Ebola patient was hospitalized in Helsinki Thursday evening as he developed fever after his travel to Liberia.

MOSCOW, October 31 (RIA Novosti) — A man with Ebola-like symptoms was taken to a Helsinki hospital Thursday evening, Yle News reported on Friday.

According to the Yle News, the Ebola suspect is being held in isolation at Helsinki’s Meilahti Hospital. His treatment is expected to start on Friday afternoon.

The patient’s nationality has not been confirmed yet, but according to a Finnish official, he is said to be an American. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the man has been hospitalized because of fever, which he developed three weeks after his travel to Liberia.

The patient is highly unlikely to be infected with Ebola, as the three-week period after his departure from the West African region, during which he should have developed certain symptoms if infected, has practically expired, said Finnish medical expert Dr. Jarvinen in an interview to the Wall Street Journal. “Furthermore, he has said that he has not been in contact with people infected with Ebola,” Dr. Jarvinen added.

Since the Ebola outbreak in March 2014, a total of 13,703 victims have been registered in West African countries, with nearly 5,000 people having died from the disease. West African countries are the most affected by the epidemic, but virus exportation cases have also recently been registered in the US and Western European countries, World Health Organization (WHO) reports.
