NEW YORK, September 3 (RIA Novosti) –The Kiev government still hopes to “bring back” Crimea that seceded from Ukraine and joined Russia earlier this year and needs help of the international community for the purpose, Ukraine’s UN envoy said Friday.

“We still believe that <… >with the help of the international community we will bring it [Crimea] back,” Yuriy Sergeyev said.

In September, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko claimed that Kiev would reacquire Crimea by winning "economic, democratic and liberal competition for minds and sentiment of Crimean residents."

Crimea reunified with Russia in March following a referendum on the region’s status, with 96 percent of the voters being in favor of reunification. Ukraine and the West refused to recognize the results of the vote calling it illegal. Russian President Vladimir Putin in a speech following the referendum stressed that it was held in full compliance with democratic procedures and rules of international law.
