WASHINGTON, April 22 (RIA Novosti), Lyudmila Chernova – US-Russia cooperation is mutually beneficial for both countries and neither side is ready to put bilateral relations at stake over the Ukrainian crisis, John Quigley, professor emeritus at Ohio State University, told RIA Novosti Tuesday.
“The United States is getting a great advantage out of certain aspects of the relationship with Russia. I don’t think Obama wants to forego those advantages. And Russia gets advantages as well, so for both it is advantageous to maintain a good relationship,” Quigley said.
The ongoing stalemate over Ukraine has brought cooperation between Russia and the United States to a standstill. On Sunday, The New York Times published an article suggesting that US President Barack Obama was incorporating a strategy of “writing off” Russian President Vladimir Putin, instead moving toward a strategy of isolating Russia from other leading nations.
Quigley, while not denying that some in the US would like to see a weakening of relations with Russia, said that it would be a grave mistake if Obama opted for such a containment policy toward Russia.
“There certainly are some elements, especially in the Republican party that would like to see a lessening of relations with Russia. But it would be rather troubling if he does pursue the line that the article suggests, because there are many areas of cooperation between Russia and the United States that would be lost,” Quigley said.
