Georgian feminists have called for a rally on Tuesday to “end the institution of virginity” because an intact hymen “cannot remain an indicator of a woman’s chastity in the 21st century,” the group said on a Facebook page for the event.

TBILISI, July 29 (RIA Novosti) – Georgian feminists have called for a rally on Tuesday to “end the institution of virginity” because an intact hymen “cannot remain an indicator of a woman’s chastity in the 21st century,” the group said on a Facebook page for the event.

More than 400 people have indicated that they will attend the rally, to be held in Tbilisi in front of the National Forensics Bureau, where reportedly hundreds of women every year undergo a $100 examination to certify their virginity.

The self-proclaimed Independent Feminists Group says on the event page that a virginity test is an “ugly and humiliating practice” that violates a “woman’s fundamental right to free choice.”

The “institution of virginity,” which establishes “control over women’s sexuality,” is an anachronism, the group says.
