Kuwaiti opposition groups deny that they want to see “Egypt-style” regime change in the country, Al Jazeera reported on Monday.

“We love our country and we do not want upheavals and a repetition of events in Yemen, Egypt and Tunisia,” former speaker of the country’s parliament Ahmad al-Saadun said.

He said the opposition forces wrote to Kuwait’s ruling family explaining their stance and asserting that did not want to see regime change by force. The former speaker also confirmed that the opposition would boycott the December 1 parliamentary elections and continue their peaceful protests.

On Sunday about 250,000 opposition members gathered outside parliament to protest against changes to the country’s electoral law ahead of December’s elections.

Although the opposition won majority of the vote in February parliamentary election, the results were declared invalid by the Constitutional Court in June and the former parliament, loyal to authorities, was reinstated.

However, mass public unrest forced the Emir of Kuwait to dissolve parliament and call new elections for December 1. The leader also adopted a one-person-one-vote system, which the opposition claims is aimed at electing a rubberstamp parliament.

“Changes to the voting law and the coming re-election are unacceptable and illegal,” al-Saadun told Al Jazeera.

Kuwaiti opposition launched several protest actions in the latest months, which ended in clashes with police. Dozens were arrested on charges of organizing riots.
