Two days of fighting between Turkish army troops and the forces of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party ended in 17 fatalities on the Kurdish side, local media reported on Saturday.

Thirteen insurgents were slain on Friday and four more on Saturday, Turkish television NTV said, citing unnamed military sources. No casualties were reported for the army.

The military operation in the Hakkari Province near the Iraqi border is ongoing, with the army deploying military helicopters against the insurgents, the channel said.

About 500 alleged Kurdish militants were killed in army raids in recent months, according to official reports from Ankara. The total death toll in the Turkish-Kurdish conflict since its beginning in 1978 is estimated at 40,000.
