Slovakia on Tuesday suspended alcohol imports from the Czech Republic where more than 20 people have already died of methanol poisoning, the country’s news agency SITA reported.

The ban imposed by a special governmental commission aims “to protect [Slovak] nationals from irresponsible actions,” the agency quoted Agriculture Minister Lubomir Jahnatek as saying.

At least 22 people died of alcohol poisoning and more than 30 were hospitalized in serious condition in the Czech Republic in the past two weeks despite a total ban on all sales of liquor stronger than 20 percent alcohol.

On Sunday Poland also banned alcohol imports from the Czech Republic, which is suffering the worst outbreak of alcohol-related poisoning in the last 30 years.
