Western countries have urged an end to violent attacks on their embassies, which were sparked by a movie mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

The EU has appealed for Arab and Muslim leaders to "call immediately for peace and restraint," and the United States has urged Sudanese authorities to protect foreign diplomats. The U.S. is sending marines to defend its embassy in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

There are fears of further unrest as at least seven people were killed in protests in Khartoum, Tunis and Cairo on Friday.

U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt, Yemen and Libya were attacked earlier this week over the film, “Innocence of Muslims,” which mocks Islam and Prophet Muhammad. Hundreds of people were injured in clashes with police, and about 20 were killed, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.
