Russia urged its citizens on Thursday to leave Yemen in the wake of the growing tensions in the capital, Sanaa.

"The situation is escalating every hour, the tensions are not easing," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said. "In the wake of the aggravated conditions in this republic, the Russian Foreign Ministry urges Russian citizens to refrain from any visits to Yemen, and those who are already there, to immediately leave the country."

Earlier on Thursday, Al-Jazeera reported that an estimated 2,000 members of Yemeni opposition tribal groups, "armed and ready to fight," had entered Sanaa to confront forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been in power for 33 years.

"We expect [the tribal fighters] to take control of different government complexes [in Sanaa]," the editor of the Yemen Post, Hakim Al Masmari, told Al-Jazeera.

According to Al-Jazeera, most of the armed clashes take place in Hasaba, a district in northern Sanaa. At least 115 people had been killed over the last week, pushing Yemen to the brink of the civil war.

Anti-government protests against Saleh have been in full swing for nearly five months with more than 180 protesters killed, according to doctors' reports.
