China opened its Consulate-General in Russia's East Siberian city of Irkutsk on Friday to promote regional ties between two countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui, who attended the unveiling ceremony with Irkutsk Region Governor Dmitry Mezentsev, said the opening of the Consulate-General in Irkutsk is a key event in bilateral ties to enhance rapidly developing cooperation between the two countries.

According to the agency, China's newly opened Consulate-General will cover cooperation with Russia's Irkutsk Region, the Transbaikal Region, the republics of Buryatia, Tuva and Khakassia.

Relations between Russia and China have been intensively developing. During Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's visit to China in October this year, contracts worth $3.5 billion were signed.
