Seven Turkish soldiers were killed and three wounded in a terrorist attack in the country's northern Tokat Province, the General Staff reported Monday.

The General Staff said a military vehicle on a patrol mission was attacked in the Resadiye District. Turkish authorities suspect the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) could be to blame for the attack.

Earlier it was reported that six soldiers were killed and some 10 wounded in the clash, the biggest since late 1990s.

The PKK is considered a terrorist group by Turkey and several other countries, including the EU and the United States.

The Kurdish area of southeastern Turkey has seen 25 years of fighting between separatist guerillas and government troops in which an estimated 40,000 people have died.
