Russia, US agree dialogue with radical Syrian opposition impossible - Lavrov
“The situation is worsening. Armed opposition groups are splitting more and more. There is information that about 13 commanders said they were not going to obey the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian National Coalition, which is the FSA’s political affiliate as I understand it,” Lavrov said.
According to the Russian Foreign Minister, “they would like to introduce what they call Sharia laws in Syria and not only there but in neighboring regions too”.
“And then other 40 groups said they would be creating an Islamist movement. These people are moving closer to al-Qaeda than to the Free Syrian Army which is being portrayed as the secular armed opposition. So the trend is in the favor of Jihadist radicals among those who fight on the ground. And it is not only our condition. It is the condition of the Americans that we cannot and must not talk to these people as the actual situation on the ground,” Lavrov added.
Russian Foreign Minister also shared his concerns that Syrian radical extremists may hinder the destruction of chemical weapons.
“I think this is a highly probable scenario and we would like to avoid it at any cost,” Lavrov has said.
No one has proof that Iran decided to create military nuclear program
On Iranian nuclear issue, Lavrov asserted that both Russia and the US agree that Iran hasn’t made a decision on the creation of military nuclear program and no intelligence service in the world has a proof of it.
“I haven’t seen any proof from any intelligence service in the world, whether it’s Russian, European, US or Mossad intelligence. None of them has announced that the Iranian leadership made a political decision on the creation of military nuclear program,” the head of the Foreign Ministry said.
Iranian nuclear issue could be resolved in 6-9 months amid cooperation of parties
Sergei Lavrov also said that he agreed with the assessment of the Iranian authorities that all issues related to the Iranian nuclear program could be resolved in six to nine months.
"Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif want to resolve this issue and resolve it quickly, they spoke about six to nine months if everyone cooperates. I agree," Lavrov said.
Russian diplomat in Netherlands detained in violation of diplomatic conventions
Lavrov also commented on the Hague incident with a Russian diplomat.
Dutch police detained the aide-envoy of the Russian embassy in the Netherlands in violation of all diplomatic conventions, Russian Foreign Minister said.
"The latest situational development in relations with the Netherlands is related not to Greenpeace but to an unacceptable attitude towards the Russian diplomat, whose house was opened forcefully and he himself was detained by police for several hours in serious violation of all diplomatic conventions, Vienna and others," Lavrov said.
Russian Foreign Minister also added that it is absurd that the incident with the aide-envoy of the Russian embassy in the Netherlands Dmitry Borodin happened in the Hague, the city where the International Court is based.
"This happened in the Hague - the place where the International Court is, this is absurd," Lavrov said. "We expect that our Dutch friends will explain, apologize and punish those, who violated the Vienna Convention," Lavrov said.
"We should receive explanations and apologies from the Netherlands today, not later and we want to know what disciplinary measures will taken to these police officers," Lavrov added. "And then after we get the reaction to this demand, we will see how to build relations in the future," the minister said.
"To be more precise, explanations were made that someone had told the police that he and his wife mistreated their 2-year-old and 4-year-old children, which is absolutely unacceptable. Police have no right to enter a diplomat's home," he said.
