Moscow skeptical of Obama’s proposal for nuclear weapon cutting
On Wednesday, speaking in Berlin, US President Barack Obama said that he would suggest cutting nuclear arsenals of the two countries by one third and also cutting stocks of Russian and American tactical nuclear arms in Europe.
The approach towards disarmament should be complex, insists Moscow. As the US continues to deploy elements of the missile defence system in Europe, and at the same time, Russia cuts its arsenals, this will weaken Russia’s security level. This is inadmissible, emphasized Vladimir Putin.
“The US continues to deploy its strategic missile defence system. We estimate the moves by our American partners positively. At the same time, no one has rejected this programme. It’s a question of time, when and where elements of the missile defence system will be deployed. Moreover, some military experts consider the possibility of making a preemptive strike even against a nuclear power. We have to take this into account in our armed forces developing plans,” Vladimir Putin said.
Russia’s political leadership cannot take Barack Obama’s proposal seriously, until Moscow does not receive judicial guarantees from Washington that the US missile defence system is not directed against Russia.
