Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged demonstrators on Saturday to "immediately" end their protest against a controversial redevelopment project in Istanbul's Taksim Square, as protesters and police clashed for a second day.

"I call on the protesters to stop their demonstrations immediately," Erdogan said, asking them to avoid causing "further damage to visitors, pedestrians and shopkeepers."
