UN envoy calls for establishing control over Mali's north
The elections in Mali can only be held after establishing control over the country’s northern areas, Romano Prodi, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, said on Monday.
The statement comes amid the ongoing political crisis in Mali that started in March 2012, when President Amadou Toumani Touré was ousted following a coup in capital Bamako.
The ouster was followed by touaregs and armed Islamist groups taking control of Mali’s north.
