US expects reciprocal tactical nukes cuts from Russia

Rose Gottemoeller, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control, has said that the NATO was ready to cut its tactical nuclear stockpile if Russia took reciprocal steps to reduce its TNW in the Euro-Atlantic region.

Speaking at a Washington security conference, Ms Gottemoeller stressed that the Alliance had already reduced the number and role of US strategic nuclear weapons in its military doctrine, adding more cuts could follow under the agreements of the 2012 NATO summit in Chicago.

The US arms control official pledged NATO’s commitment to the new strategic arms reduction treaty, signed with Moscow in December 2010.

Rose Gottemoeller underscored cooperation with Russia on TNW cuts was a “special priority” which Washington was ready to negotiate.
