What is wrong with the weather?
Poland and Slovakia are now covered with deep snow. In France, metrological alarm of the so-called “orange “ (the before last) level has been announced. In Paris airports, several flights, including ones to Moscow, have been postponed. Tourists and residents of nearby villages are being evacuated from the French ski resort of Bareges because of the threat of snow slides. The north of Spain is covered with snowbanks, which, to a large extent, is paralyzing life there. However, in the country’s south, it is, for some reason, hot like in summer.
Meanwhile, in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, the temperatures are a little too high for this time of the year.
Now, what is wrong with the weather? Yuri Varakin from the Russian State Weather Service explains:
“On the one hand, a stream of cold air has come from Norway. On the other, it is still warm in the region of the Mediterranean Sea and at Europe’s Atlantic coast. It is this contrast of temperatures that caused the heavy snowfalls.”
“The air from the north brought cold to France. In the mountains, the temperature now reaches -20° Celsius. The cold northern air has ousted the warm air to Western Europe, and this is why it is untypically warm there now.”
It is an analogous contrast of temperatures that caused the hurricane in the US, meteorologists believe.
According to preliminary information, 10 people were killed as a result of this hurricane.
Every year, contrasts of temperatures become higher and higher. Meteorologists are saying that a new cold pole has appeared in the Northern hemisphere.
Yuri Varakin says:
“Until now, it was believed that the world’s coldest place is the village of Oymyakon in Siberia. Temperatures of -50° or even -60° Celsius are a common thing in winter there. However, the abnormal cold, which was recently experienced in the Canadian province of Quebec, may compete with the Oymyakon frosts.”
“This February, an untypical situation with weather formed in Canada and the US,” Yuri Varykin continues. “An unusually cold atmosphere front formed in the area of the Great Lakes and the Hudson Bay, while the air over the Atlantic Ocean was still warm. This contrast of temperatures caused the hurricane and heavy snowfalls.”
It looks like weather anomalies are already becoming a norm. However, so far, this is typical only for the Northern hemisphere.
The temperature changes are caused mainly by industrial emissions in the atmosphere. In such a situation, large cities are doomed to experience heavy snowfalls and ice rains in winters and extreme heat in summer.
Alexey Kokorin, who heads the climate program of the World Wildlife Foundation, says:
“At present about 80% of weather anomalies are caused by human activity. Dust emissions cool the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas emissions heat it. However, on average, the atmosphere is being more heated than cooled. This is why scientists are speaking about a global warming.”
However, experts say that there will be no more weather anomalies till the end of this winter. They say that in a couple of days from now, snowfalls will stop in Central Europe, and it will become warmer. At the same time, it will become a little colder in Eastern Europe and Russia, where it is unseasonably warm now.
At the same time, in Yakutia and Chukotka, Russia’s coldest regions in the country’s northwest, the temperature will fall to about -55° Celsius. However, for these regions, this is only 8° lower than the average temperature for this time of the year.
Weather surprises will continue in spring and summer. In some regions, it will be untypically hot, and in some – untypically cold.
