Sochi hosts World and Sport forum
Last year, world-wide military expenses reached 1.7 billion dollars, UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon said. This sum is incomparably higher than the UN peacekeeping budget. Even one percent of this sum is sufficient for carrying out several hundreds of humanitarian, peacekeeping operations or sport competitions, the UN Secretary-General’s special adviser on sport for Development and Peace Wilfried Lemke said commenting on global military expenses.
Really, sport can be a bridge between people of various beliefs, says five-time Olympic champion Charmine Crooks.
During the discussions at the forum, the participants had more than once mentioned examples of successful sport initiatives that brought rival sides together. For one, during the table tennis tournament in Qatar in 2011, sportsmen from North and South Korea and athletes from the Middle East played on one ground.
Sport has what is necessary in contemporary life; respect for the rules of the game and the rivals. This has to be fostered in people from their childhood, says Rene Fazel, President of the International Ice Hockey Federation, member of the IOC Executive Committee.
Sochi hosted the forum, which was for the first time held outside Monaco, at a time when the first test competitions are being held at the Olympic facilities. According to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, the city is completely ready.
The forum, which was held for the sixth time under the patronage of Prince Albert 11 of Monaco, will end on the 2nd of November. The next meeting will be traditionally held in Monaco.
