Pentagon denies report of Russian U-boat patrolling Gulf of Mexico
“I don't know what that information was based on, but it was not correct," Wendy Snyder, a spokeswoman with the Pentagon, said.
On Tuesday the Washington Free Beacon cited unnamed American officials as saying that a Russian Akula nuclear submarine had been patrolling the Gulf of Mexico for weeks and was not discovered until it had left the strategic waters.
According to US officials, the incident allegedly exposed deficiencies in American anti-submarine warfare capabilities after significant budget cuts were made by the Obama administration, which has announced its plans to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next decade.
The US Navy wasn’t available for comment.
