The US capital has enhanced security in an unprecedented manner in the lead-up to President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, practically closing the city to the public and calling in 25,000 National Guard troops to ensure security during the event – in the absence of Donald Trump – for fear of ripple effects of the 6 January unrest.

Sputnik is live from Washington, DC on Wednesday, 20 January, hours before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
