US to Face Daesh Terror Threat in 2017 Amid Mosul, Raqqa Operations - Senator

The United States will remain at risk of terrorist attacks next year as the US-led coalition against Daesh continues to execute operations in Iraq and Syria, US House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to McCaul, the threat to Europe and the United States will persist in 2017, particularly as jihadists flee from Mosul and Raqqa.

"Throughout the year, ISIS [Islamic State] conducted 62 attacks, wounding 732 and killing 215 in places like the United States, France and Belgium," the release stated on Tuesday.

The release added that the number of Americans radicalized in the United States has grown tremendously in recent two years.

McCaul explained that since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, DC, 227 homegrown jihadist cases have been registered in the United States. Of those, 115 were identified in 2015 and 2016.

The senator noted the trend will probably accelerate in 2017 as a result of the expansion of Daesh propaganda across the world.

Daesh is outlawed in the United States, Russia and numerous other countries.
