The Republican Party should stop putting money into the campaign of its presidential nominee Donald Trump, 123 Republicans said in a letter to the Republican National Committee (RNC) on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The republicans who signed the letter include two current members of Congress, as well as individuals who have worked in national, state and local politics over the past three decades.

"Given the catastrophic impact that Donald Trump's losing presidential campaign will have on down-ballot Senate and House races, we urge you to immediately suspend all discretionary RNC support for Trump, and focus the entirety of the RNC's available resources on preserving the GOP's [Republican Party’s] congressional majorities," the letter stated.

The letter cited Trump's "divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence and record-breaking unpopularity" as reasons to stop funding his campaign.

Trump has won considerable support for criticizing establishment politicians who have defended the status quo, including Republicans, and repeatedly talked of changes to existing globalist economic and foreign policies.

The latest national poll released on Tuesday shows Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton leading Trump by nine points.
