WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John Brennan said he had doubts about Syria remaining an integral country after the civil war ends.
"I don't know whether or not Syria can be put back together again. Where there is some type of confederal structure, where the various confessional groups are going to have the lead and governing their portions of the country," Brennan told Aspen Security Forum on Friday.
Brennan stressed there could not be peace in Syria unless the Iraqi crisis is also addressed.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
