NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The suspect, identified as Timothy Sauers, is expected to survive, prosecutors pointed out.
"During the interaction, the man was observed to be in possession of a handgun which he pointed at Toms River Police (TRPD) officers. This encounter resulted in TRPD officers firing upon the suspect," the statement noted.
Sauers, 29, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life and pointing a firearm in the direction of another.
The incident took place the same day five officers were shot dead in Dallas, Texas during a peaceful rally against police brutality. The rally was organized after two African-American men were killed by police in the US states of Louisiana and Minnesota.
Prosecutors added that the shooting is in no way related to the shootings in Dallas.
