An increased number of Syrian refugee admissions endangers the security of the United States, US lawmakers said in a letter to President Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The lawmakers, including Congressman Michael McCaul, argued that the Obama administration has failed to adequately engage state and local governments on refugee resettlements, and did not resolve existing intelligence gaps in the vetting process.

"We believe the surge of admissions of Syrian refugees poses a high security risk to our country," the letter stated on Friday.

The lawmakers emphasized that the places of admission for the refugees should be better prepared for their arrival.

Obama has committed to allowing 10,000 Syrian refugees to enter the US in the fiscal year 2016. The move caused significant opposition among Republican lawmakers and governors due to security concerns.

Up to date, 4,700 refugees have been approved for resettlement, while 7,900 are waiting for security review, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
