At least 14 people have died in the US state of West Virginia in massive flash floods, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said in a press conference on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Up to ten inches of rain fell in West Virginia within seven hours on Thursday.

"At this point, we have confirmed 14 individuals have lost their lives in the storm," Tomblin stated.

Tomblin noted that the flooding was "among the worst in a century for some parts of the state."

He pointed out that state and local emergency officials continue to work on ensuring the residents safety.

West Virginia authorities declared a state of emergency for 44 counties on Thursday and deployed 150 members of the National Guard to assist first responders.
