WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Early on Sunday morning, a shooter identified by authorities as US national Omar Mateen, opened fire in a crowded gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida killing 49 people and injuring at least 53 others. The 29 year-old shooter was previously investigated by US law enforcement for possible ties to terrorist organization.
“I urge you to declare an emergency under the Stafford Act so that ‘the full resources of the federal government’ can be made available for the individuals, families, and communities impacted by this ‘horrific massacre,’” Scott wrote to Obama.
The request included federal government provision of health and safety measures as well as measures to manage and reduce immediate public health and safety threats.
Scott further indicated that he has remained in “constant communications” with federal, state and local law enforcement following the incident.
