Republican presumptive presidential candidate Donald Trump is unfit to lead the United States and should not be trusted with command of the US nuclear deterrent, frontrunning Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton told a rally in San Diego, California.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "I believe the person the Republicans have nominated for president cannot do the job," Clinton said in her speech on Thursday. "He is temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires immense responsibility… This is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes."

The speech was the most sustained criticism of Trump both personally and on foreign policy issues that Clinton, long regarded as the frontrunner for the Democratic Party nomination, has given.

Trump Edges Clinton on US Economy, Defeating Terrorists - Poll
Recent polls show Trump closing his approval ratings gap with her rapidly across the country.

Clinton, who has proposed invading Syria in order to eliminate both the terrorist group Daesh and the government of President Bashar Assad, also criticized Trump's foreign policy proposals as "dangerously incoherent."

Clinton is campaigning across California before the most populous US state holds its primary election on June 7.

Most recent opinion polls show her lead shrinking to only two percent in the Democratic primary, well within the margin of error, against challenger US Senator Bernie Sanders. However, she needs less than 10 percent of the party delegates which remain up for grabs primary elections to beat her self-professed socialist opponent, making her nomination all but certain unless she is indicted as the result of an ongoing FBI investigation.

Hillary Clinton, in her role as Secretary of State, was primarily responsible for the US intervention in Libya that many blame for the disintegration of what was once the wealthiest and most developed country in North Africa.
