The United States has no specific information about potential terrorist attacks in Europe this summer amid new travel alert for Americans issued earlier in the day, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In its travel alert, the State Department warned Americans about possible terrorist attacks on European major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation.

"I’m not aware of any specific credible terrorist threat…in any particular place in Europe," Kirby said.

"This alert was issued just as they always are, based on accumulation of information and what we know continues to be an interest by terrorist groups to conduct attacks against western targets and Americans specifically in Europe."

Kirby noted the State Department actually issued a renewal of a travel alert from March due to major events coming up in June and July, including the European Football Championships, Tour de France and the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day.

The State Department urged US citizens to be vigilant in public places and on mass transit systems, and to be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions. The travel alert expires on August 31, 2016.
