The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has allocated $85 million that can be used by US states and territories to address the threat of the Zika virus, CDC’s Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response Director Stephen Redd said in a press release on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The White house has previously stated that June and July will become peak months for the spread of the mosquito-born Zika virus.

"These funds will allow states and territories to continue implementation of their Zika preparedness plans, but are not enough to support a comprehensive Zika response and can only temporarily address what is needed," Redd stated.

In December 2015, Puerto Rico became the first US territory to report local transmission of the Zika virus, which has been associated with several health conditions, like a temporary paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome.
