WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russian diplomatic mission to the United States has requested the appropriate US authorities to provide further information on the Russian national who died in US custody last week, Russian Consulate-General’s Press Secretary Maxim Goncharov said.

According to Goncharov, US authorities have confirmed to the Consulate that 46-year-old Russian citizen Igor Zyazin died on Sunday in San Diego on way to hospital from a US detention center.

"The Consulate General has established contact with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service to find out the details of this tragic incident. We requested the US side to provide us with the deceased man's documents, as well as data on the causes and the circumstances of his arrest and death," the press secretary said in a written statement to media, seen by Sputnik.

On Tuesday, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency said that Zyazin had presented a Russian passport to US Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry to the country, after which it was determined that he had previously been deported in 2009.
