NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A Russian national died while in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

"A Russian national in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) passed away Sunday night at the Otay Mesa Detention Center after facility staff and emergency personnel were unable to revive him," the statement said.

ICE identified the Russian national as 46-year-old Igor Zyazin, and

explained he had been transferred to its custody on April 24 after seeking admission to the United States at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

"Zyazin presented a Russian passport to US Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry, who subsequently determined he had been previously deported in 2009," the statement said.

The San Diego medical examiner is investigating the official cause of death.

Zyazin is the sixth individual to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2016, according to the agency’s website.
