Former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption and been ordered to repay over $5.2 million.

"Without question I let down my constituents, I let down my family, let down my colleagues, and I’m truly, truly sorry for that," Silver told the judge prior to sentencing.

The 72-year-old Democrat was found guilty in November 2015 of using his position to receive millions of dollars in bribes related to real estate, healthcare, and referral fees, all of which were disguised as outside legal fees.

He served as the state’s top Democratic lawmaker between 1976 and 2015, when he stepped down.
