A Pennsylvania police chief retired on Wednesday after he and another officer failed “miserably” on a polygraph test regarding some $10,000 in cash that went missing after a drug bust.

The Mahanoy City Borough Council accepted Police Chief John C. Kaczmarczyk’s resignation and suspended Corporal Michael Dissinger with pay, as a result of the missing money.

“Let this letter serve as a notice of my intent to retire from Mahanoy City police, effective immediately,” Thom Maziekas, president of borough council, read Kaczmarczyk’s retirement notice out loud.

The cash in question went missing two years ago following a drug bust.

“There were several different stories as to where the money went, what happened to it. And finally, it was decided the state police should be notified,” Schuylkill County District Attorney Christine Holman told local station WNEP.

The retirement and suspension leaves the Mahanoy City Police Department with only one full-time officer, but the mayor has reportedly asserted that they have six part-time officers who will be picking up extra shifts to ensure there is always an officer on duty.
